Chapter Three

The sun peeked through the blinds, hitting Chase’s face. He blinked his eyes open, yawning and stretching slightly as to not disturb his guest. He opened and closed his eyes a few more times while reaching out for Jessica. Huh?

He felt around on the bed, finding nothing warm to hold on to, and he jerked upward, now wide-awake. She wasn’t in his bed. He didn’t need to check the time on his clock. He always awoke just as dawn broke. Maybe she was in the bathroom. “Jessie?”

Silence filled the air around him, and he yanked the covers off his body before swinging his legs off the side of the bed. He had carefully tucked a sleeping Jessica into bed after their amazing romp, but the only thing remaining was the faint smell of her perfume on the sheets. He glanced over to the bench at the foot of the bed. Last night as she snoozed, he had folded her clothes and stacked them there, placing her purse on top to hold them in place and setting her shiny boots just underneath. This morning there was no sign they had ever been there.

He walked over to his desk in the corner of the room and checked for a note. There was plenty of paper, and a cup filled with several pens and a pencil. He surveyed every inch of the writing space, but she hadn’t left him as much as a sticky note. Maybe she tucked away a note somewhere else. He checked the nightstand but was disappointed again.

Perhaps he’d have better luck in the kitchen. There was a dry-erase board on the refrigerator where he jotted down items he needed to pick up at the store. Still butt naked, he raced out of his room to see if she’d left a message there. Standing in front of his Whirlpool side-by-side, he scowled, palming his face. No fucking way! I’ve been one-night-standed! You gotta be fucking kidding me.

Just to be sure, he scoured the kitchen countertops and his living room looking for a sticky note or some other mention of what an awesome time she’d had fucking his brains out. His shoulders slumped, and he frowned as he headed to his bathroom, but his hopes of finding sweet nothings scrawled in lipstick on his mirror were soon dashed. He took a piss and washed his hands, racking his brain for why she would have sneaked out on him.

Maybe she sent me a text. He checked his phone. There was a message from Baxter about finding Chase’s scarf in his car but nothing from Jessica. Car…huh…could she have left me a note on the windshield of mine? He jogged to the door and almost dashed out but remembered he was in the buff at the last minute and went back to his room.

He threw on a short-sleeved athletic shirt, a pair of running shorts, and some white socks before grabbing his cross-trainers out of the closet. Once he was all suited up for a run, he grabbed his keys and jetted out the door.
